日本のモチトウモロコシに関する研究
トウモロコシにはモチ性とウルチ性のものがあり、モチ性は貯蔵澱粉に関する遺伝子*Wx
*
が劣性ホモになったときに発現する。モチトウモロコシはフリント種に突然変異が起こったもので、東アジアの各地で確認されている。このモチ性の突然変異は比較的容易に起こるため、一か所で突然変異が起こり、東アジア一帯に広まったのか、トウモロコシが東アジア各地へ伝播したのちにいたるところで突然変異が起きたのかはわかっていない。トウモロコシの日本への導入経路は三つあり、日本にはじめに来たのは1570年代九州もしくは四国とされており、導入後東進した。そして1809年には北海道でも栽培されていて、このときのトウモロコシはモチ性であったとする記録がある（戸澤、2005）。二つ目の導入経路は1868年にアメリカから北海道へ、そして三つ目は戦後にさまざまな地域からスイートコーンなどが導入された。ここでモチトウモロコシの導入に関して、1954年に中国の品種系統を改良したものが農家に初めて試作に移されたという記録があるが、すでに1951年の農林省の統計でモチトウモロコシの在来品種が７品種系統確認されているという記述もある（阪本、1989）。これより、日本在来のモチトウモロコシは16世紀にポルトガルから導入されたトウモロコシの突然変異によって日本で期限した可能性もある。そこで本研究は、日本のモチトウモロコシが日本で発生したかどうかを調べることを目的とする。

Research on waxy corn in Japan.
Maize have two types of starch: non-waxy and waxy. Waxy type
appears if the
Wx genes that control the starch are recessive homozygote. Waxy
corn
resulted from the mutation of flint type and is distributed in
East Asia.
This mutation happens relatively easily but it is unknown when
the mutation
occured. Two hypoyhesis that explain the origin of this
mutationbhave been
claimed. The first one, is that maybe, the mutation was occured
in a
specific place before being distributed to Asia. The send one,
claims that
maize was first distributed to Asia, and then, the mutation
occured. Additionally, maize was introduced to Japan as follows:
first, in
1570 it was introduced to Kyushu or Shikoku area. However, there
is no
confirmed information about which of those both places was. Then,
it was
eastward and was settled in the mountains. In 1809, waxy type
maize was
cultivated in Hokkaido. After that, maize was again introduced to
Hokkaido
from America and after the second world war, it was introduced to
many
different areas in Japan. Also, Ito Kenji introduced to Japan
waxy corn from
China. First, it was breeded and then, farmers tried to cultivate
it in
1954. However, even there is the information mentioned aboive,
according to
the statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, seven
landraces
were recorded in 1951. Taking into account this evidence, it is
possible that Japanese waxy corn was originated in Japan after
its first
introduction. Then, the object of this study is to reveal the
origin of
Japanese waxy corn.
