“Wild mangoes in Java: Their Local Names and Uses”
First, I would like to report the field survey in Java, Indonesia.
The
survey was conducted in August to see the local situation of wild
mangoes
uses. We observed 3 species: M. foetida, M. odorata, M. laurina.
We
recorded local names for these mango trees, to find that keweni
that have
been said to be for M. odorata are also given to some better
variation of
M. foetida. This result implies that keweni in Java not always
refer to M.
odorata but to better mangoes among genus Mangifera. Though the
number of
sample is not enough, this survey suggests that people
distinguish (or give
names to) mango variation not depending on the botanical species
but on the
palatability of fruit.
“How Much Morphological Change Needs for Fruit-Tree to be
Domesticated?”
And secondly I would like to discuss about domestication process
of wild
mangoes in Thailand. At a conference two weeks ago, I made a
presentation
that titled “Wild Mangoes in Northern Thailand: Their Local
Names and
Uses.” In the last part of the presentation I discussed why the
wild
mangoes in Northern Thailand did not have chance to be
domesticated nor
utilized often by local people. Some participants there
criticized for the
discussion on the beginning of domestication process of mango
tree. Hence,
in this seminar I show the same presentation with further
discussion
focusing on fruit-tree domestication.
