テキサスにおけるサトウキビの窒素肥料要求性を調べるために、窒素肥料の量を変える、一括して施肥をする、分割して施肥をするといった条件でサトウキビの栽培実験を行った。
サトウキビの収量は植え付け栽培、株出し栽培において112kgN/haまで窒素肥料に強い応答性をみせたが、それ以上の施肥量では収量の大きな増加は見られなかった。窒素肥料の要求性は栽培品種によって異なった。また、分施はサトウキビ収量および砂糖収量に大きな影響を与えなかったものの、分施によりサトウキビの生育の後期に葉の窒素含量が増加することが、砂糖含量の減少につながった。

Several studies were conducted to determine the N fertilizer
requirements of sugarcane in texas. Treatments varied among
studies and included differnet rates of nitrogen fertilization,
single and split applications. Sugarcane yields responded
strongly to N fertilization in plant crop and ratoon crops up to
112 kgN/ha. Requirement to N fertilizer were affected by
cultivars. Splitting the fertilizer applications did not
significantly affecte cane or sugar yields.Increase in leaf N
concentration were associated with decrease in sugar percent cane.
